World Series of Poker News

NASCAR, meet WSOP.

Starting this year, it sounds like you'll be able to wear 32 different patches during the World Series of Poker if your heart desires. Harrah's has significantly reduced the restrictions when it comes to personal advertising. Here's what you can and can't wear:

CAN (it's a short list)

  • Multiple logos

    CAN'T

  • Logos larger than 12 square inches
  • Logos for a DOT COM gaming site that conducts business with United States residents
  • Logos for habit-forming drugs, tobacco or handguns
  • Logos for any liquor product other than Milwaukee's Best Light or other Miller product
  • Logos for lotteries or illegal gaming businesses
  • Obscene, defamatory or libelous material
  • Logos for any pornographic products

Also, any logo for a DOT NET website must contain a clear and visible DOT NET suffix that is at least the same size as the site name.

I'm still trying to figure out if online gaming sites that accept U.S. customers will be permitted to advertise their DOT NET sites. That would, of course, apply to sites like PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Ultimate Bet.

Regarding third-party registrations, the rules state this:

Third-party registrations for players are not permitted unless submitted by Official WSOP sponsors; Official WSOP promotions or product licensees, or civic, charitable, business, casino and other land-based entities officially licensed to conduct satellite tournaments for the 2007 WSOP. No third-party registrations will be accepted from online gaming sites conducting business with U.S. residents.

Does this rule make it harder for PokerStars and Full Tilt to buy their players into the World Series of Poker? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I believe Lee Jones keeps saying they will find a way to get their players in.

Kinda hard to pull off a SEAL-styled attack using a mob of 1,000+ players that will qualify in the upcoming month.

I'll accept bacon, Captain Morgan, and TastyKakes for sponsorship into the WSOP PLO8 tourney.

There's no reason the poker sites can't do exactly what full tilt did last year with their "WSOP Bracelet Races", even if Harrah's won't allow them to directly buy people in to the event. All the major sites have their hospitality suites set up within a 1-minute walk of the WSOP room at the Rio. All you gotta do is go to the suite for the site where you won your WSOP buyin, and there they can give you Rio WSOP buyin chips in an amount equal to the amount you won in your satellite. Then you walk across the hall to the WSOP room cashier and buy in to your event with the chips.

While it is surely easier to just get bought in directly, this extra step is so easy that IMO it's not even worth worrying about. Point is, you can play in whatever WSOP satellites you want, and you'll have no trouble whatsoever getting your prize and buying in to the event of your choice.
