The Pentagon Hammer

by Otis

Since I started writing for Up For Poker, I have never, ever posted a hand history. It's been a little rule I had for myself. However, I've been given a Thanksgiving gift and I think that's reason to break the rule for once. The gift? I can coin a phrase (actually, I can bastardize a term coined by Grubby).

I give you...

The Pentagon Hammer.

Could call it the pentagram hammer since you were beat by 666.

Posted by: BadBlood at November 25, 2005 8:30 AM

That is a dedication to the hammer the likes of which have never been seen. Even though you lost, you sir, have won.

Posted by: Marty at November 25, 2005 9:25 AM

I think I had close to 5K in my bank once.

Posted by: Bob at November 25, 2005 9:44 AM

Even worse:

At least you didn't need running cards to suck out. =D And yes, all the money went in on the flop.

That hand cost me $500, tho I did have Villain #2 beat with my Pentagon Hammer (he had QQ).

Posted by: F-Train at November 25, 2005 11:49 AM

One semi-serious question ... would you have done that if you only had $1,500 in your stacks?

(And dude, are you just playing good poker, or are they paying you too much money over at poker stars? Last time I saw you, you were "stuck" in 10/20 limit action.)

Posted by: Dan M. at November 25, 2005 2:46 PM

Answer #1: If I only had $1500 sitting in front of me, I wouldn't have been playing the stupid hammer in the first place. The stack sitting in front of me was the product of several hours of pretty hard work. I had more than quintupled up and was feeling froggy (admittedly, I am an idiot). That said, had I chosen to play the hammer with only $1500 sitting in front of me, I'm not sure I would've played the hand much differently. When both Villians called my flop bet, I put one on an overpair and one on top pair with a decent kicker. There was the possibility one of them was playing 45 or 89 (likely the small blind), but I chose to discount the possibility (again, because I am idiot). And once I put in the turn bet, I was pretty much committed to the pot. I could've checked the turn, but I honestly believed I was ahead. Of course, once both guys pushed, I figured I was dead to another seven or deuce. The small blind might've been a bigger idiot than me. The other guy played his hand perfectly.

Answer #2: I have never used home-money for poker. I've had a good year and the bankroll has done pretty well. In fact, this game is a bit of a step down for me, taken to return me to my comfort zone after a pretty rough November Slide.

YOUR AN IDIOT...HOW PROUD U MUST BE....

Posted by: YOUR A at November 25, 2005 6:46 PM

Well, I hope you at least utilized HDouble's "parachute" explanation once the hand was over... If you don't know what I'm talking about, DEFINITELY go to his site and search for "parachute." One of the better poker stories I've every read.

Oh, and yes, FPS is exxxxpensive.

Posted by: -EV at November 25, 2005 11:27 PM

YEAH OTIS....YOUR AN IDIOT.

Sorry. Pet peeve of mine. If you can't figure out contractions, just use both words, dude. This becomes more even important when you are anonymously flaming someone...I won't even get started on the use of "u" for "you."

Posted by: marty at November 26, 2005 1:24 PM

Marty, I think you might have been too subtle. Anyone ignorant enough to make that mistake probably doesn't know the correct version. Allow me to help.

"Your" is the possessive pronoun. Used in a sentence: "Your education was clearly lacking."

"You're" is a contraction, combining the words "you" and "are." Used in a sentence: "You're a moron."

In case it is still not clear, you should have used the latter (that means the second one).

Posted by: at November 26, 2005 11:52 PM

Sorry, my name should have been attached to the above comment. I don't do my flaming anonymously.

Posted by: Jen at November 26, 2005 11:54 PM

Marty and Jen,
Your way to freak'ed out bye peoples punctucation. There spelling and grahamer is problems to. But u shouldnt get so upset bout it.

Posted by: teamscottsmith at November 27, 2005 10:25 AM

Guilty as charged, and I don't apologize for it. :) If you intend to communicate in the written media, you need to have a grasp of the fundamentals. For pete's sake, we're talking about elementary school lessons. However, I might have held back a bit if the idiot had at least had the balls to attach a name to his comment, even a pseudonym.

Posted by: Jen at November 27, 2005 10:49 AM

You know how sometimes when you see a guy catch an especially brutal kick to the junk in a movie or on TV, you feel it yourself just a little bit?

That's the way I just felt reading this story.

Brutal. Just brutal.

What the hell?

Excellent hammer drop btw.
