Efficacy of Azithromycin is similar to penicillin in treating syphilis
There are many clinical trials that are going on the efficacy of the different medicines available. Among these include the use of Azithromycin in the treating of the different diseases. It is general belief that the Azithromycin can be used for the best treatment of the upper respiratory infections; however, when it comes to the treatment of the other diseases, there is the great benefit of using the Azithromycin in the other diseases. There are many other diseases in which Penicillin has also be used, however, the allergic reactions to penicillin and the early development of the resistance to this antibiotic has restricted its use as compared to the use of Azithromycin.
According to the new research done at the National Institute of Allergy and infectious diseases, the efficacy of the Azithromycin is as similar to the penicillin when the treatment of the patients suffering from early syphilis yet HIV negative. Hence, this clinical trial has proved that Azithromycin can be used in the STIs too. The research was done on the group of 517 patients. One group of the patients was injected with the Benzyl penicillin and another group of patients was injected with the dose of Azithromycin. For the patients with the Azithromycin, the results were as successful as 77.6% as compared to the patients injected with Benzyl Penicillin who have the success rate of 78.5%.
The results were similar for the both group of patients, and when it is seem to the use of it, Penicillin is being used for it as the conventional treatment. However, the use of this drug has been restricted because of the allergic reactions it can cause, the availability in the injectble form and early development of the resistance. On the other hand, the use of Azithromycin has been proven to be quite good when it comes to the treatment of Syphilis. Not only the drug has been proven to be quite good, but there is the ease in using this drug. The oral form of Azithromycin is as much efficient as compared to penicillin, there is very less resistance reported and there is nearly none reports of the allergic reactions reported against Azithromycin. Hence, all of these factors are making the medical professionals in the using of Azithromycin as the drug of choice for the treatment of syphilis, yet the certain standard precautions shall be practiced before treating the patients with Azithromycin.
